If you derogate others you will be removed from the island.
We more often use the adjective form of derogate, derogatory--meaning expressing a low opinion of someone or something. The less common verb, derogate comes from Latin derogatus, originally meaning to annul a law. If one derogates they are dismissing and belittling another with their tone and/or words...with the expressed intent of making someone feel less important (annul) or not worthy of respect.
We know a derogatory statement when we hear it because it generally contains a suggestive or out right insult. It's a put-down that is unnecessary and uncalled for. At the very least, being polite and having manners creates the desired outcome for the overall common good and positive public and social interactions.
Words have meaning. Someone who derogates with harsh and harmful words should be held accountable for denigrating others as "less than." When this is done, its attempted purpose is not only to diminish the value of that person, but it also dismisses the collective worthiness of civil discourse.
If people are compelled to derogate or 'belittle' they, themselves, are 'little.' It reflects more on the person who uses words of contempt and scorn---a person who is lacking a basic sympathetic connection with other human beings. Their example is destructive. Selfishly finding fault in others indicates a lack, a 'littleness' of faith in the goodness of individuals.
An observation: There have been young people who have chosen to derogate others and I personally have sought to instruct them how their behavior hurts everybody including themselves. I do not allow it to be fostered or encouraged especially in my classroom where there is to be no fear of insults or put downs. Overall, my students have been decent and uplifting examples to those around them. Mutual respect is not only expected but a given; to denigrate another is to be removed from the whole group and apologies are made.
What is disturbing, however, is that the reality of such uncivil discourse is NOT overwhelmingly coming from the youth---it's today's ADULTS!
They should be kicked off the Island of Decency and be assigned to tread the dangerous waters of their own making---until they figure out how to be big, not little...how to grow up.
