My blog posts this year will take stock of the power of words. I'm going to share and hope you will explore the many wonders of the meaning of words and what they represent in our life, in our world. I will examine words and their impact in a historical, cultural, and even personal context. Words are fun! They should bounce, and swing on the playground of what we call 'language.' This language that we share creates a conveyance of communication by which we find meanings in order to make possible unbelievable human experiences! The essence of language which is made up of a fascinating code of words can bring to bear gushing springs of creativity. It could be the creation of a song through lyrics, a poem, a letter of kindness, a story...yes, even a story. Stories have the power to instruct and allow the reader to open heart and mind to a greater understanding of self and others. Words can create memorable characters who we become enthralled or obsessed with. Think of your favorite book. Now, I bet there was a character that 'touched' you in a way that was everlastingly significant on some personal level. It's through words that family stories can be passed down to the next generation. Words spoken, words written can help bond people with a shared history that mold and shape who we are today. As most of you know, I was hit (like many) with the ravage of floodwaters. I'm sentimental. I save the smallest of pieces of paper if words are on it that represent a fleeting thought or idea. This is also true with the letters my past relatives and friends wrote to the papers I wrote in high school and college. For me, these words on paper had to be saved if possible. I spent many hours attempting to dry out boxes and boxes of these written gems. Some were lost. A part of me still grieves. Moments of expression, in whatever form, are creative wonders frozen in a minuscule time capsule. It's history. It's part of who I am. It's part of who we are as a culture. I hope you'll share this adventure and discovery with me. The meaningful and perpetual possibilities of the power of words are at our fingertips and await a memorable dance. |
