To master effective English usage, whether it be socially, publically or professionally, one must understand the 'why' behind a word and what it means rather than simply memorizing or falling into lazy habits. Words are symbols with an abundance of meaning. Each word a little stick of dynamite that has the potential to explode a mine shack of ideas.
Frequently, we make common mistakes because we are constantly exposed to them. I hear announcers on TV, especially in the sports field, who do not follow basic rules of grammar, usage, and pronunciation. (Please...the "t" is silent in the word often---less = amount, fewer=number...and don't get me started about "RBI"-it's already plural!) More careful consideration is required.
Bottom line: there's an ever-growing demand that we be able to communicate effectively. We must express knowledge and opinion forcefully, clearly, and yes, correctly. So...ok, Miss Drake I get it...you can stop staring at me now.
