"Often life is a frantic avoidance of the truth." --Adyashanti
Avoid is to keep away from, keep clear of, or shun. Is it good to avoid? As young kids, we are taught to keep away from specific things such as strangers, anything that can cause harm or danger to us, and lying. Sometimes it's not always good to avoid things because we aren't taking opportunities that are given to us if we avoid what we are afraid of or if we doubt ourselves. Going out of our comfort zone can teach us life lessons and can even show us new interests and hobbies that we never thought we would like.
I had a job interview in late December. I thought I would do awful and not get the job. I doubted and avoided getting a job because I was nervous and I'm used to having school be my first priority. I pushed myself because if I never experienced what it's like to be out of my comfort zone, then I would never know how to succeed in life. Many people avoid what they are afraid of, whether it comes to heights, trying new things, or being around new people. People tend to avoid others when they are feeling at their lowest point because it helps them cope with their emotions. While others like to be social butterflies to get their minds off things when conflict is going on in their life.
As a kid, I avoided going down the basement by myself because I watched too many scary movies in my childhood. Also, I avoided telling the truth when my friends wanted to hang out, but I never knew what to say, so instead, I lied and told my friend that I had other plans that day. It's very common that people tend to avoid the truth because for the majority of the time, and depending on the situation, the truth can and does hurt.
Avoidance has its pros and cons and everyone has their own factors of things to avoid. However, avoidance can help someone from all kinds of emotions, but overcoming what you fear can make you a better person in the long run. It helps you discover many things about yourself that you never knew about.
Albert Schweitzer once said, "One who gains strength by overcoming obstacles possesses the only strength which can overcome adversity."
