"You can't change people. People never change." I can't remember the first time I heard that saying, but I know I've heard it numerous times. I think that it's true, but at the same time it's not. I believe you can't make people change, but people can change. People change when they've been inspired or influenced. However, when it comes to human nature, those innate subconscious drives and motives that everyone possesses come out. People haven't changed.
This school year is winding down for seniors and I've learned about many interesting topics and themes in Honors English. One topic that has struck me was the theme of human nature. It was introduced learning about the various pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. I thought It was funny how years ago people were still greedy, stilly lusty, and still selfish. We, as humans, haven't found a way to completely rid ourselves of these unconscious intentions because people are like this way today. These intentions are the thoughts that quickly sprint across our minds, and the things that linger in the back of our heads a little longer than they should.
Although, we've found ways to hide our ulterior motives, we make them less noticeable, so much so, sometimes we might forget that they are there, but they always remain. If everyone knew what everyone was privately thinking or plotting, would friendship even exist?
This topic really made me think about how I viewed the subconscious part of myself. If people change at all, do they only change when it's good for them or when they can get ahead?
Still, I believe that people can change for the better, or at least inspire others to think differently, be a bit more optimistic, or love a little harder and be more patient, despite our nature.
