Audacity. What does that word mean? Have you ever known someone audacious? I pondered on these questions myself. Merriam Webster Dictionary states that its definition is, intrepidly daring. Being audacious has its perks and downfalls though. Another definition for audacious is, recklessly bold. I had always thought of audacious as a negative trait to have, but as I started my research of this word, I found I might be wrong.
Synonyms for audacious are: courageous, brave, bold, daring, and even heroic. Audacious seems to mean many things. It has a bundle of synonyms which all seem to contradict each other.
Having audacity is almost like being overconfident, but having the right intentions. There are just as many negative synonyms for audacious as there are positive. Someone who is audacious could be described as impudent, irreverent, brazen, and discourteous. These pretty much oppose the words like courageous and heroic.
Audacious seems to describe someone who is fearless and dedicated to what they want, but won't let anything stand in the way even if it requires being rude. I hadn't thought about audacious meaning "heroic" or "courageous."
The dictionary provided an example of the word and used it in a sentence, I began to rethink what the word really meant. This sentence was "He had audacious vision of the city's bright future." Reading this made me realize that although audacity has negative synonyms, it could also describe someone who has goals that require bravery and ambition.
Audacious tends to impose a negative trait, but some of the most famous movie and cartoon characters are very audacious. Harley Quinn in a popular character in the "Batman Arkham City" games, cartoon, and movies. She is referred to as "The one, the only, the infamous Harley Quinn!"
Being a therapist for the Joker, Quinn foolishly falls in love and agrees to help the Joker take over Gotham. She is extremely audacious, though if you were the Joker's soul mate, you would be too. Her main goal is to please and impress the Joker. She won't stop for anything or anyone. She pursues the Joker and puts her whole heart into any evil deed she needs to do.
Along the way, she is brazen and inconsiderate of others. She says at one point, "Love your perfume. What is that, the stench of death?" While speaking to the killer Croc who is ultimately annoyed by her boldness, exclaims, "You hate mankind much? Let me guess, mommy didn't take you to Chuck E. Cheese on your sixth birthday. I can recommend a good therapist!"
Though Harley Quinn pushes herself to the limit to achieve her goal, she doesn't have a filter and is seen as rude. Being audacious can exemplify someone who has ambition, but is also brazen at the same time.
The word tends to be a negative trait, but can also be seen as useful or helpful in some ways, such as helping take over a city or destroying a superhero. Audacious is a simple word with a complex meaning.
