Symbolically, fences are associated with civilization, the keeping in, the keeping out, a mark of distinction that is to be matched with a decision on the part of human or beast - what is the next move?
I remember facing a major decision in my life and I was waffling as to what to do. I was out to lunch with a friend and finally after a lengthy discussion he said: "Janice, you must get off the fence!" It hit me and a choice was made.
The origin of 'fence' is a shortened version of defence (defense) brought to us from the Middle English. The essence of the Latin word defendere meant to ward off, guard.
This is the last post on my blog until school begins again in September. I had this word in mind for awhile, but thought it would be good as the last fence 'post' of a line ponderings.
Young people (as well as adults), pause and identify any barriers (fences) in your life; what obstacles are there to you moving ahead? Climb over.
Are there any fences you've built during your school years that will help surround and protect you from interlopers who will try to pull you down from succeeding? Stand your ground.
Before you leave friends and even family behind, are there any fences you must mend? Reach out and forgive.
Pause. But don't pause too long, because that means you are sitting on the fence. Your life at this critical part of your path is filled with vital decisions. You cannot sit, rest, or lack confidence. Decide what is best for you...there is no movement if you are paralyzed a top a fence post searching for an answer to be handed to you.
Whichever side, Jump. With feet firmly girded by a strong foundation, move. Drive forward with a strength of commitment and purpose...and just get down and walk.
