I've written in journals practically all my life. Even though I haven't stuck with the more formal format of a journal recently, I've always had papers strewn about my desk, napkins in my pockets, all with snippets of thoughts and words that I was compelled to capture with pen and paper.
For me, writing was a window that provided me with a clear view of life's scenery around me at that moment. I could see the colors of friends more sharply. I could distinguish the details of the various terrains of paths that led to decisions I had to make. I could examine the trees, both barren and fruitful, of my personal strengths and weaknesses. When I closed the pane on the window, I could then see my reflection in a new light.
Writing was my way of 'knowing myself.' I still am on this exploration of self-discovery. Now, it's time for you to find your way.
You are prepared. You have available valuable tools to place in your backpack.
A flashlight of knowledge. You have learned more than you think you have. This knowledge will shed a light on the ignorance along the way. It will dispel it, light always consumes darkness.
A compass of compassion. Take your kindness and spread it in all directions. It will keep you on the right course of 'doing unto others as you would want them to do to you.' It's rewarding to give of yourself and it feeds your soul when you tire.
A blanket of friendships. Yes, take the comfort of the experiences you've had with your friends. Relationships often tear away our scars of fear and loneliness. Embrace those new friends along the way. Cherish times past with your friends, be secure with the anticipation of an expanded circle of mutual love and respect.
A rock of pain and hurt. Yes, a rock! (Sorry, just broke my rule of the writer's "three.") Even though you may be burdened with past suffering, take it with you ahead and glean the insights that have made you stronger from the experiences. Along the path, as you become more confident, as you get to know yourself...take it out from your backpack and with authority place it down with assurance and tell yourself: "This is my mark, this is my mark on the landscape of the earth I inhabit...this is my mark that I'm leaving of my life on this world!"
